Haute-Savoie, France
France's best-kept secret for intermediate skiing. Part of the 445km Évasion Mont-Blanc area with Megève, connected to Les Houches by the historic Mont Blanc Tramway. A proper spa village — genuine thermal baths, lower prices than Megève, and some of the most enjoyable blue runs in the Mont Blanc massif.
Saint-Gervais is the resort most frequently recommended on Reddit for skiers moving from beginner to intermediate. It came up in multiple threads asking about easy blue runs near Chamonix — consistently described as better for beginners and early intermediates than Brévent/Flégère, with more blues per square kilometre and a gentler overall character. The Reddit consensus: 'Saint-Gervais or Combloux are your best choices with a lot of good runs to progress through.' The key sector for blue runs is the Mont d'Arbois area, accessed from Le Bettex.
The Folie Douce here provides the après-ski table-dancing experience that Chamonix town centre famously does not.

Monts Rosset chairlift (Bettex-Mont d'Arbois sector)
La Finance is the signature blue run at Saint-Gervais and the one mentioned most often when locals and visitors describe the resort's best intermediate skiing. Access via the Bettex-Mont d'Arbois gondola from Le Bettex, then the Monts Rosset chairlift into the upper area. The run descends through dense forest back toward Le Bettex, lined with fir trees on both sides. The official resort description: 'evolves among the trees with charming bends and great for building up a rhythm.'
The run a local Redditor specifically recommended when asked about the best blue circuit for progressing intermediates: 'La Finance — a beautiful and easy blue — back down to the bottom of Bettex.' Best skied in the morning when the snow is firm (can ice up in the afternoon on sunny days). Loops well with the Bettex nursery area for a full morning's progression.
Bettex-Mont d'Arbois gondola (upper station area)
Clémentines is the other main blue run specifically named by Saint-Gervais resort as the two runs 'to be experienced for intermediate level skiers' — alongside La Finance. It sits in the upper Mont d'Arbois area with open panoramic views rather than the forested character of La Finance. The hilly configuration means more variety underfoot.
A step up from La Finance in terms of variety — the 'hilly configuration' gives it more interest than a simple groomed descent. The panoramic views here toward Mont Blanc are exceptional on a clear day. Combine a morning on La Finance with afternoon laps on Clémentines for the full range of intermediate skiing at Saint-Gervais.
Bettex chairlift or gondola (Le Bettex area)
Prapacot is a sunny, south-facing blue run in the Bettex area that links toward the La Princesse gondola and the Megève side of the ski area. It connects to the green Le Plan or the blue Encraty run down to La Princesse — the natural route for exploring toward Megève on the Évasion pass.
A good warm-up run and the starting point for anyone wanting to ski across toward Megève. Sunny in the morning which makes the snow pleasant early in the day. Well-groomed and consistently easy throughout.
Alpette gondola or Prapacot chairlift
Encraty is the blue run that takes you from the Saint-Gervais side of Mont d'Arbois down toward La Princesse — the gondola that connects to Megève. If you have the Évasion Mont-Blanc pass, this is the natural route for skiing across to Megève for a day or for lunch. A long, consistent descent through forest.
The key connector blue between Saint-Gervais and Megève. Follow this run to La Princesse gondola, cross to Rochebrune, and you're in Megève. A satisfying route and a genuine cross-resort skiing experience. The Megève golf club at the bottom of the Megève side is famous for hot chocolates — worth the trip.
Bettex-Mont d'Arbois gondola (top station, Les Marmottons area)
Chateluy starts from the Les Marmottons beginner area at 1,840m — the purpose-built high-altitude learning zone at the top of the Bettex-Mont d'Arbois gondola. It runs 4km back down to Le Bettex through varied terrain. A local guide note: 'might look a little steep at the top but once you've zig-zagged down the first bit, it's gorgeously varied with a fantastic powdery stretch between the trees.'
The progression run for anyone who has mastered the Les Marmottons beginner area — and a great run in its own right for easy intermediates. 4km from the high-altitude beginner zone at 1,840m to the Bettex base is a genuinely satisfying descent. The views of Mont Blanc from the top of this run are extraordinary. The Reddit-recommended circuit: Marmottons beginner area → Chateluy → Bettex gondola → repeat.
Idéal chairlift (Mont d'Arbois summit area)
The Idéal-Mandarines route is a connector blue from the top of the Idéal chairlift at the Mont d'Arbois summit down toward La Princesse and the Megève connection. The SNO guide describes it: 'goes hell for leather at some points to keep you going over flatter bits — ends up at the Megève golf club for amazing hot chocolates.'
A longer, more committed blue that takes you from the Mont d'Arbois summit toward Megève — the cross-resort skiing experience. Budget 45-60 minutes for the descent and a lunch stop. The Megève golf club at the bottom is worth arriving at; the terrace has unobstructed Mont Blanc views.
Mont d'Arbois area lifts (toward Saint-Nicolas de Véroce direction)
Péré Noël (Father Christmas) is a blue run that ventures toward the Saint-Nicolas de Véroce sector — the quiet village on the other side of the Mont d'Arbois ridge from Le Bettex. The SNO guide mentions it specifically for a pre-Christmas visit: 'ski the Père Noël piste over towards Megève.' Less busy than the main Bettex runs.
A quieter alternative to the main Bettex blues — head toward Saint-Nicolas de Véroce for a different perspective on the ski area and far fewer people. The baroque church in Saint-Nicolas is one of the most beautiful mountain churches in the French Alps, visible from the run.
A genuine 19th-century spa village built around its thermal springs, set in a dramatic gorge at the foot of Mont Blanc. Considerably cheaper than Megève across the valley, with a real French village character — market squares, baroque churches, thermal baths at 38-40°C. The new Le Valléen gondola (opened 2024) connects Le Fayet train station directly to the village in 5 minutes, making it accessible by direct TGV from Paris.
Traditional spa village · Great value vs Megève · Family-focused · TGV accessible
Stay in the village and take the Bettex-Mont d'Arbois gondola up each morning. La Flèche d'Or at Le Bettex is the classic mountain meeting point for a vin chaud with Mont Blanc views. O'Communailles restaurant mid-mountain is famous for detaining people for the entire afternoon.
For après-ski with proper table dancing and live music, the Folie Douce is here at Mont Joux — far better than Chamonix for that experience (kicks off 2:30-4:30pm).
